As the Nintendo 64 turns 19, we celebrate our favourite games

Tom Victor

The Nintendo 64 is a symbol of our misspent youth here at JOE, and today marks 19 years since the console was first released.

It’s times like this we regret not installing a console and big screen in the office, but we’ve done the next best thing by looking back at some of our favourites from the 90s staple.

Goldeneye

First-person shooters have moved on a lot since the late 90s, but Goldeneye will always have a place in our hearts.

The quintessential N64 game had the perfect combination of entertaining gameplay in single player and multiplayer formats, along with a theme tune for the ages.

Diddy Kong Racing

Top-class racing games are key to the success of any console, and throwing some of our favourite characters into the mix made this a worthy competitor to the more high-profile Mario Kart 64.

In fact, even now we will occasionally dust off the old N64, load up the cartridge and revisit tracks like Hot Top Volcano and Boulder Canyon.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, we usually play as Banjo the bear.

Super Mario 64

Like Liverpool in the midst of an attacking injury crisis, we will always go back to Mario.

They say you can’t improve on perfection, but by that token everyone should have stopped making video games after this, one of the original N64 releases all the way back in 1996.

Pretenders will come and go, but Super Mario 64 can’t be topped.
