Wayne Rooney helps DC United into the play-off places for the first time this season

Since arriving in the US, Wayne Rooney has played a key role in turning DC United’s season around

The Major League Soccer side were bottom of the table when Wayne Rooney joined them from Everton in June, but moved into the play-off positions for the first time with a 1-0 victory at home to Dallas on Saturday.

Their winner came late on, Russell Canouse eventually nodding home after Dallas had failed to clear a long-range free-kick from the former England skipper with four minutes to play.

The result leaves United one point clear of Montreal Impact in the Eastern Conference with an extra game in hand on the Canadian side.

Rooney has found the net nine times since his transfer to MLS, including a brace in their last outing against Chicago Fire. He also provided an incredible last-ditch tackle and assist in their last-gasp win over Orlando City in August.

Despite his side taking another crucial victory at Audi Field, Rooney endured a frustrating evening, failing to score several chances which fell his way as the game went on.

“I could’ve played another 90 minutes and not scored tonight,” he admitted after the game.

DC United’s next game sees them welcome Toronto FC to Audi Field on Thursday. After that, they host New York City FC  on Sunday.
