Paul Scholes wants England to drop Harry Kane

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes believes England should drop Harry Kane for the Euro 2016 match against Wales.

The ex-Manchester United star, who played for the Three Lions at Euro 2000 and Euro 2004, believes Roy Hodgson's team would benefit from replacing the Spurs man with Daniel Sturridge in the starting line-up. "I still think he's England's best centre-forward and he should be playing," Scholes told the Oldham Chronicle. "I do like Kane, I think he's a great centre-forward, but I think if you're playing somebody up front on his own, you need someone with pace and skill, somebody who'll occupy the defenders a bit more. I think Sturridge would do that." Kane, who spent the bulk of the season playing as a lone striker for Tottenham Hotspur, outscored every other striker in the Premier League and was tipped by club team-mate Ryan Mason to win the Euro 2016 Golden Boot. However he failed to force a save against Russia, and was - perhaps surprisingly - put on corner duty. Sturridge scored 13 goals in 25 games for Liverpool in the 2015/16 campaign, and has not found the net for England since the 2014 World Cup defeat to Italy, though he has missed a number of games through injury. He was not the only England forward to stay on the bench throughout the opening game, with both Jamie Vardy and Marcus Rashford waiting to make their respective tournament debuts.
