Kieran Trippier has betting ban suspended by Fifa

Trippier was hit with a 10-week ban last month

Kieran Trippier has had his 10-week ban for breaking betting rules suspended pending appeal.

Last month a Football Association panel found the England and Atletico Madrid full-back had committed four breaches of a betting rule in July 2019 – around the time of his move to Spain from Tottenham.

Trippier was issued with a £70,000 fine and a worldwide playing ban as a result. His manager Diego Simeone described the decision as “completely unjust” at the time. He immediately requested the case be revised, asking for help from both the Spanish football federation and Fifa.

Following an intervention from his club, Fifa have now postponed the ban with Trippier having missed his side’s 1-0 victory over Getafe in midweek.

‘Following the appeal and, specifically, the request for provisional measures lodged by the club Atletico Madrid, the Fifa Appeal Committee has approved to stay the extension of the suspension until the procedure is over before the committee,’ a spokesperson from Fifa said.

The development means Trippier will be able to resume playing for Atleti, who will claim top spot in La Liga if they beat Alaves on Sunday afternoon – one of three games in hand they have over current league leaders and city rivals, Real.
