Four Ugandan athletes ‘missing in Scotland’ after Commonwealth Games

The athletes did not show up to a scheduled team meet up on Tuesday (4 August).

The Commonwealth Games took place in the Scottish city over the past fortnight, with the East African nation competing in a range of disciplines including athletics, basketball, boxing, track cycling, netball, swimming, and judo.

According to a report from Ugandan outlet NBS Sports, quoted here by The Sun, four athletes on the country's boxing team; Angel Katushabe, Nuhu Batte, Ibrahim Khemis and Emily Nakalema, were not present as the group were expected to meet up for their scheduled their return home on Tuesday.

The Weekly Observer, another Ugandan outlet has also reported on the disappearances.

The newspaper claims to have spoken with officials at an organisation called Uganda Bombers, the country’s national boxing team, who confirmed the four are missing.

Returning to details from the NBS Sport, is has been stated that one of the missing boxers, speaking anonymously, said the four athletes intend to seek asylum.

The report details: "The boxer appealed to Ugandans for understanding and asked not to be judged for the decision.”

At present, there has been no official confirmation from any of the boxers, nor the Ugandan Athletics Federation, regarding the story.
