Jesse Lingard tweets he’s in Barcelona… you already know the joke Man United fans are making

'We're f***ed lads'

Alexis Sanchez is very nearly a Manchester United player.

(Depending on when you’re reading this, he might already be a Manchester United player.)

With many United fans still pinching themselves at the news that their club have won the race for the Chilean, who was strongly linked with a move to Manchester’s other club, talk has already turned to how he will fit into Jose Mourinho’s plans.

Obviously, when fit, not all of Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard can be accommodated in United’s attack, leading some to speculate over which players might be spending more time on the bench in the weeks to come.

Given that Sanchez has played much of his football on the Arsenal left, some have pointed out that his arrival could be bad news for Rashford and Martial – both of which have been played their by Mourinho. Others have tipped him to take up a more central role, operating behind Lukaku. If so, this might force out Lingard – whose excellent form is part of the reason Henrikh Mkhitaryan has hardly featured for United in recent weeks.

With this in mind, you can probably guess the reaction to this tweet…

With the United players given a couple of days off following their win over Burnley on Saturday, Lingard has headed to Barcelona – all the excuse needed for some fans to (jokingly) suggest he’s over there to seal a move to the Camp Nou.

Obviously, he hasn’t.
