Not just the title race the two are fighting for

As well as the race to win the Premier League this year, Arsenal and Manchester City are set to battle it out to sign one of the league’s best midfielders.

Both teams are plotting a move to sign Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes in the summer, according to The Telegraph.

Newcastle will almost certainly have to sell one high-profile name in the coming months to comply with profit and sustainability rules. Paris Saint-Germain are also apparently interested.

Two clubs may low-ball Magpies

Guimaraes reportedly has a £100m release clause in his contract but any interested parties may try their luck with a lower offer.

While everyone is aware of Man City’s financial spending powers, Arsenal may have to generate extra funds through player sales. The futures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho are in doubt and both could be moved on.

“We have to see how we finish first and what we are capable of doing,” Mikel Arteta said when asked about transfer plans.

“That is what this team, this club and our people are demanding — to keep moving forward, in a ruthless way. Because we are not satisfied with where we are.”

City and Arsenal to do battle again

If the two are to try and pursue Newcastle’s man then we could be in line for a repeat of last year’s summer window when the two tried to sign Declan Rice.

It looked as if Man City would be the favourites however they couldn’t match West Ham’s demands, leading to Arsenal swooping in to sign the England international for £105m.

Rice has certainly paid that fee back, proving to be one of the signings of the season and instrumental in the Gunners’ title charge again.
