He had to get involved.

Darren Fletcher was involved in a heated exchange with a Manchester United fan after the 4-0 win over Sabah on Thursday night.

United comfortably returned to the Champions League, courtesy of goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez.

However, after the match, Fletcher had to put a United supporter in his place, with footage emerging outside of Old Trafford.

@_strettyend on X captured the footage, with Fletcher approaching the fan.

Why did Fletcher approach the fan?

It's understood that the issue arose over players refusing to sign autographs outside the stadium.

Fletcher was not impressed with one fan's "abusive" tone, telling him in front of supporters gathered outside and the Sabah players.

In the video above, Fletcher could be heard saying: "Listen, it doesn't matter you can't speak like that, have some respect. You're the reason that people don't sign."

His approach was met with major cheers from supporters gathered, who chanted his name as he walked away.

Fletcher was at the game watching his son, Tyler, who was on the bench for the victory.

On Instagram, fans were divided over Fletcher's response. One supporter disagreed with Fletcher, commenting: "Fan is right the players should acknowledge and do their bits pre and post match. Fergie would expect that. Another example of how standards have dropped."

A third added: "I’m a Liverpool fan and must admit this is brilliant from Fletcher. He is spot on."
