Mac Allister had Liverpool fans right behind him

There was no better way for Alexis Mac Allister to put the attention back on his football.

Only a day after admitting that Liverpool’s decision over his contract had left him “very, very sad”, the midfielder stepped up in the Champions League and produced the goal that secured a huge win over Atlético Madrid.

The match was level at 1–1 when the ball fell to Mac Allister just outside the box. He unleashed a fierce effort with his left foot, his weaker side, sending the ball beyond Jan Oblak and giving Liverpool a 2–1 lead they would hold onto.

Mac Allister’s reaction was almost as memorable as he immediately sprinted towards the Kop, clutching the Liverpool badge on his shirt as he celebrated in front of the home supporters.

The perfect response to a very difficult week

The goal came just a day after after the Argentine had opened up about the uncertainty surrounding his future in the press room at Anfield

He revealed that his agent had been told Liverpool were not currently prepared to offer him a new contract, despite his existing deal running until 2028.

That decision was made even more difficult to accept after Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch both signed long-term extensions, leaving Mac Allister as the only member of Liverpool’s title-winning midfield without a new deal.

There had also been genuine opportunities for him to move elsewhere during the summer, but Mac Allister chose to remain at Anfield.

He made it clear how much he loves both the club and the city, while saying he had nothing to prove, although he understood that he still had to demonstrate his level on the pitch.
