Newcastle United have signed defender Amar Dedic from Benfica for about £30m, handing new head coach Matthias Jaissle a right-back days before the Premier League season starts. The 24-year-old had a medical on Tyneside on Monday and has signed a five-year deal, with the move announced on Tuesday — his birthday.
The signing fills the gap left by Kieran Trippier, who joined Wolves on a free transfer when his contract expired earlier this summer, in one of the more eye-catching moves of the summer transfer window. Dedic could go straight into the side for Sunday’s opener at home to Liverpool, with Tino Livramento still recovering from a calf injury picked up on England duty in June. He knows the ground already, having been part of the Benfica side beaten 3-0 by Newcastle in the Champions League last season.
It’s a special feeling and a really big honour for me to join Newcastle United. Working with Matthias again was a big factor for me. We know each other well. He knows what I can bring on the pitch and I’m really happy to be playing for him again. Playing Premier League football at St James’ Park is going to be really special.
Amar Dedic
Jaissle, who coached Dedic to the Austrian title at Red Bull Salzburg in 2023, said he was “really looking forward” to working with the defender again, and that Dedic is “athletic, aggressive and technically very good, but also has a lot of potential to develop further”, BBC Sport reported.
Sunday’s visit of a Liverpool side who endured a fractious pre-season will offer an early indication of whether £30m has been well spent.
