‘Extraordinary’: Tory leadership contenders use debate to obliterate their own party’s dismal record

Tory leadership contenders Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss spent the first 30 minutes of the TalkTV debate obliterating their own government’s dismal record in a bizarre self-own.

The former chancellor pointed to “doubling” energy bills and soaring inflation as he made the case for installing him as the next Prime Minister.

Truss, similarly, added that we have the “highest tax burden in this country in 70 years” and the “lowest growth in the G7”, seemingly forgetting that her ruling party of 12 years might have something to do with that.

Last night’s debate came to an abrupt end after Kate McCann fainted live on air.

TalkTV apologised to viewers for not resuming the programme, saying in a statement: “Kate McCann fainted on air tonight, and although she is fine, the medical advice was that we shouldn’t continue with the debate.

“We apologise to our viewers and listeners.”

Ms McCann, TalkTV’s political editor, was meant to co-host The Sun’s Showdown: The Fight for No.10 alongside The Sun’s political editor Harry Cole, but he tested positive for Covid-19 hours before the programme was due to air.

The former chancellor and Foreign Secretary both tweeted to wish the journalist well shortly after the interruption.
