Nigel Farage erupts at security after being hit with milkshake while campaigning in Newcastle

Nigel Farage has become the latest right-wing political figure to have a milkshake thrown at him in the run-up to the European Elections. The Brexit Party leader erupted at his security in the aftermath of the attack close to Monument in Newcastle city centre, telling his security it was "a failure" and asking "how did that happen?". He was then rushed into a car by his team with the protester arrested by police, it is reported. The 55-year-old has only intended to visit Newcastle for around an hour, before departing to rallies in Wakefield and Bolton later in the day.

Following the incident, Farage tweeted: "Sadly some remainers have become radicalised, to the extent that normal campaigning is becoming impossible."

He added: "For a civilised democracy to work you need the losers consent, politicians not accepting the referendum result have led us to this."

Far-right political candidates Tommy Robinson and Carl Benjamin have previously been targeted with milkshakes during the European election campaign, leading to the sale of the drink to be banned in some McDonald's in Scotland while Farage was in the country on Friday and over the weekend. Following the ban of the drinks being sold, Burger King was forced to deny it was inciting violence in the country, after tweeting out: "‘Dear people of Scotland. We’re selling milkshakes all weekend.
