Yorkshire Wildlife Park shares message after man's death

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has released a statement following the death of a man who entered a tiger enclosure at the attraction on Saturday, 10 October.

The man reportedly jumped into the enclosure at around 1.35pm, with witnesses claiming he was grabbed by one of the tigers. Emergency services attended the scene, but he was pronounced dead at the park.

The attraction closed early that afternoon as police and paramedics responded to the incident.

In a statement released later that evening, Yorkshire Wildlife Park said it was “deeply saddened” by what had happened and extended its sympathies to the man's family and loved ones.

“We are deeply saddened by today's tragic incident,” the park said. “Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the person who has lost their life.”

In a statement released today, the park also confirmed that the tiger involved would not be euthanised following the incident, reassuring the public that the animal was safe.

The statement thanked "everyone who has expressed their concern following yesterday's tragic incident."

It added: "The park will be closed today while the staff team who were deeply affected by events receive specialist support."

The statement continued to address concerns people had around what would happen to Altai the tiger.

The park said: "Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger. We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised as a result of the incident."

Police said officers were supporting the man's family as they dealt with the loss, adding: “Our thoughts are with them at this distressing time.”

The force also urged people not to share videos of the incident that have been circulating online.

“We are aware of videos circulating online and we would encourage people not to share this footage,” police said.
