UK would run out of food within one year from now if a no-deal Brexit happens, farmers union warns

The National Farmers Union has warned that the UK would run out of food at this point next year, if the country leaves the EU without any Brexit deal.

The UK currently only produces 60% of the food it needs, and should we no longer be able to easily import from other countries it would lead to shortages.

The NFU has now called for the government to make food security a key priority in the Brexit negotiations.

NFU president Minette Batters said in a statement:

“The UK farming sector has the potential to be one of the most impacted sectors from a bad Brexit – a frictionless free trade deal with the EU and access to a reliable and competent workforce for farm businesses is critical to the future of the sector.”

If Britain was require to be completely self-sufficient, research suggests that August 7th,  2019 is the date when the country would run out of food.

Two weeks ago, Brexit secretary Dominic Raab gave assurances that the UK would have “adequate food supplies” following leaving the EU.
