A man in his 50s has been left with life-threatening injuries after a punching bag machine was allegedly pushed onto him during a fight in Liverpool.
The incident took place on Berkley Street, near Liverpool Cathedral, where police were called shortly before 7pm yesterday following reports of a disturbance outside a row of shops.
The man was reportedly caught up in the altercation as a bystander. During the confrontation, a punching bag machine was pushed over onto him, causing a critical head injury.
Emergency services took him to hospital, where he remains fighting for his life.
The area was later examined by forensic officers, with photographs from the scene showing a police tent set up outside a café and a nearby barbershop.
Merseyside Police are now working to establish exactly what happened. Detectives are reviewing CCTV recordings from businesses and properties in the surrounding streets as part of their investigation.
Detective Inspector Lee Egerton has urged anyone who witnessed the incident or may have information to come forward.
He said: “Enquiries into this incident are ongoing and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Berkley Street at around 7pm last night who saw anything or can assist our enquiries in any way to get in touch as a matter of urgency.”
