So, what exactly is the whole thing about?
Back in 1966, during a time of global unrest, with American streets crime-ridden, and Southeast Asia threatened by “godless communists”, some radical theologians asked the question, and TIME’s cover asked: ‘Is God Dead?’
The cover prompted much talk and debate among the American people.
51 years later, the magazine has brought forward the cover in homage to the original.
TIME interviewed Donald Trump about “truth and falsehood in his career” for the cover story, and it sparked the return to a cover without an image.
It’s not the first time Donald Trump has influenced their cover, not by a long shot.
The current article bears the headline:
“When a President Can’t Be Taken at His Word”.
It was written by TIME’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs.
It discusses Trump, and asks if the current President of the United States is trustworthy.
The article examines his statements during his election campaign in which 70% of his statements reviewed by PoltiFact were proven to be false.
Trump’s words, now that he is president, carry significantly more weight than they did as a candidate. TIME therefore felt it was appropriate to mimic their first ever cover without a image.
Gibbs writes:
“As citizens, it is vital that we be able to believe our President; it is also vital that we know what he believes, and why. This President has made both a severe challenge.”
