Take note!

It’s officially winter weather season as we approach Christmas, and the UK has already been subject to autumnal snow, ice, frost and sub-zero temperatures.

This has understandably led to people cranking up the heating in their homes to stave off the encroaching cold, while simultaneously causing bills to rise in tandem.

The ideal temperature isn’t one set value and can depend on a variation of factors as per Manly.

These include things such as the number of people living in a home, the house size or even your age and how active you are.

In general, the ideal temperature is between 17 and 21 degrees, however, for the elderly this is recommended to be more around 22 and 24 degrees because they move less according to Gezondheidsnet.

This said, not all rooms are made equal, and some require different temperatures.

Best practice dictating that a lower temperature in the bedroom is ideal for a better night’s sleep, in general 18 degrees is tipped to be best.

However, it is very important to not let the internal temperature of your home go lower than 16 degrees as that can cause moisture problems, promoting breathing issues, rheumatism and asthma as a result.

Meanwhile some tips to save on heating include avoiding turning off the thermostat completely as it requires a lot more energy to get the temperature up to 20 degrees from a lower point.

Elsewhere, you can use localised heat, such as electric blankets, small heaters or the comfiest way to stay warm in winter, the Oodie.

Dutch site Milieu Centraal suggests that setting the heating to maintain the temperature at 16 degrees so that the house doesn’t need a big boost in heat could save you over £100 per year.

Plenty extra to spend on presents!
