How the Premier League table would look if every ‘VAR error’ was removed

Things might look very different already...

Thanks to football stat experts Squawka, every "VAR error" over the first month of the season has been tallied, so as to understand which Premier League teams have been worst affected by the technology.

Each week Squawka ask fans to vote on each gameweek’s most controversial VAR calls.

The results of those votes, are used to make up the "table without VAR errors."

To be clear, not all of these errors haven't been classified as such by the Premier League or the Pro Ref, but are instead based on the opinions of football fans.

To make things even clearer, we've broken down the errors from gameweek four, and have established as and where they might have changed the shape of the table.

Every mistake made by VAR in the Premier League last weekend:

Starting with the most obvious call that must be struck from the record; Man City's winner against Man United on Sunday, which Pro Ref described as an "error of judgement" as they made an unprecedented apology to the Red Devils.

Enzo Fernandez was clearly in an offside position as the ball passed him and landed with the eventual goalscorer Erling Haaland.

At the time, VAR opted against penalising Fernandez because he did not touch the ball, without taking into account his impact and interference on play, dragging defenders away from Haaland and distracting Senne Lammens in the United goal. A clear error.

How this impacts the table will depend on another 'error' made during the very same match.

In the first half of the game, City's Phil Foden was shown a straight red card for an alleged kick-out on Bruno Fernandes.

In the moments leading up to the clash, Red Devils' skipper Fernandes appeared to also kick-out at Foden, but no punishment was forthcoming for the Portugal star.

Squawka's numbers appear to show that, although some 80.5% of fans believe Fernandes should have followed Foden off the field, there was still enough in Foden's actions to warrant a red card on their own.

This would have left both sides in an equal position, with 10 men on the field, and so it would be a massive stretch to predict that the call alone could have changed the scoreline.

As such with the final result in Man City vs Man United would have been a 0-0 draw, with Haaland's strike ruled out for offside.

The third and final error from the fourth matchweek, according to Squawka, was the call to give Sunderland a penalty for a supposed foul by Ezri Konsa on Dan Ballard.

Justifying the decision via X, the Premier League wrote the following: "The referee’s call of penalty to Sunderland for a holding offence by Konsa on Ballard was checked and confirmed by VAR.

"REF: 'He’s all over him at the near post facing the wrong way.'

"VAR: 'I’m happy that it’s a holding offence. The foul is confirmed. Confirming the on-field decision of penalty'"

This was countered by the social media platform's community note fact check system, responding with: "Multiple replays and stills show that Konsa was facing the ball throughout the incident until Ballard dragged him down. The refs ignore Ballard's role in the fracas and focus on Konsa alone."

Despite this being another clear error, because the penalty was missed, and Arsenal went on to win the match 2-0, it has no impact on the table.

Those errors have now been taken into account, combined with the mistakes and impact from past weeks, to complete the Premier League table without VAR errors below.

Despite having not yet scored a Premier League goal, Tottenham's situation would be far worse, with the club dropping down two places to 19th, due to the disallowed goal Nottingham Forest's Neco Williams could have scored last weekend - that would have handed the North Londoners a 1-0 loss.

Forest themselves, considering that potential result, would be three places higher in 8th, while Brentford are the club with the most to gain, who would be up to 3rd if Squawka's VAR errors were removed.
