Tributes have been paid around the world to Tina Turner who died on Wednesday aged 83.

The singer’s representative announced the news on Wednesday evening (GMT), saying:

“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland.

“With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”

A post on her official Instagram page reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner.

“With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

“Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Tina, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26 in 1939 in Nutbush, Tennessee, found fame in the late 1960s as the singer of the band Ike & Turner Revue, alongside her ex-husband Ike Turner, but later went on to become a solo artist.

The domestic abuse Ike subjected Tina to was documented in a 1993 Hollywood biopic starring Angela Bassett, which won three Oscars.

Tributes to the star have flooded in from across the world.

Elton John said Turner was a “total legend on record and on stage” in a tribute to the singer following “the saddest news”. “We have lost one of the word’s most exciting and electric performers. A total legend on record and on stage. She was untouchable,” he said.

Sir Mick Jagger, who duetted with Tina Turner during Live Aid in 1985, wrote on Instagram: “I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner. She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer.

While former US president Barack Obama posted: “Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself.”

The actor John Cleese posted this footage of himself with Tina Turner.

And Beyoncé posted on her website: “My beloved queen. I love you endlessly. I’m so grateful for your inspiration, and all the ways you have paved the way. You are strength and resilience. You are the epitome of power and passion. We are all so fortunate to have witnessed your kindness and beautiful spirit that will forever remain. Thank you for all you have done.”
