Dozens more have been left stranded
A ski resort chairlift has collapsed onto a slope at a resort in the Pyrenees leaving at least 30 seriously injured, according to reports from the Mirror.
The incident happened around midday today (18 January) when cables became “loose” on the chairlift causing it to collapse onto the slope at the Astún ski resort in Huesca, on the Spanish side of the mountain chain.
Emergency services are currently attending the scene while helicopters have been called in to help those in most urgent need.
Meanwhile, many skiers have been left stranded with some even “clinging to the cable” according to reports.
The resort has temporarily closed down while the incident is dealt with.
The police stated: “We are collaborating in the rescue efforts following an accident at the Astún ski resort (Huesca) where a 15-metre high chairlift line has fallen.
“Civil Guards from the Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group, Air Service and Citizen Security are taking part, together with the rest of the emergency services.”
This follows on from a terrible incident earlier this week when a British woman died following a “violent collision” with another skier on a black run in the French Alps.
The 62-year-old reportedly crashed into a stationary male skier, who is also British, on the Aiguille Rouge mountain in the south-east resort of Les Arcs.
The tragic incident happened on Tuesday (January 14) at around 10:30am local time.
French news outlet Le Dauphine reports that the woman died shortly afterwards from traumatic shock.
The man, 35, broke his leg in the collision and was rushed to hospital. Neither of them have been named.
Officials have confirmed an investigation is underway.
