Satanic Temple to challenge Supreme Court abortion decision

The temple has labelled itself the ‘leading beacon of light in the battle for abortion access’

The Satanic Temple has announced it is challenging the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade because it violates its “religious freedom.”

The Satanic Temple is prepared to start a legal fight against lawmakers in Texas, one of the many states in which abortion has been outlawed following the Supreme Court’s ruling last week.

The Supreme Court ruled access to abortion was not a constitutional right. At least 25 states are now poised to introduce new laws, or reactivate old ones, making it illegal to access abortion. In some instances, this could include where the baby was conceived as a result of rape or incest.

The temple says that controlling women’s autonomy violates their “belief system” and that they now “stand alone” as the “only entity that can assert a religious liberty claim” that abortion is a “central part of a religious ritual that encourages self-empowerment and affirms bodily autonomy.”

In a statement, the group said: “The Satanic Temple is currently suing the state of Texas to protect our civil rights.

“Our Texas claims are untethered to the due process Clause.

“They are a direct interpretation of the right of conscience in the Free Exercise Clause.”

They added that they were requesting ” alternative science-based abortion counseling in Minnesota” and would be suing the Food and Drug Administration for restricting access to the pill.

The Satanic Temple finished by saying: “These efforts to maintain abortion access are legally sound, but they take time to get through the courts, and regrettably, not all judges abide by the law.”

Satanic Temple spokesperson, Lucien Greaves also issued a statement that read: “I am sure Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton – who famously spends a good deal of his time composing press releases about Religious Liberty issues in other states – will be proud to see that Texas’s robust Religious Liberty laws, which he so vociferously champions, will prevent future Abortion Rituals from being interrupted by superfluous government restrictions meant only to shame and harass those seeking an abortion.”

The Satanic Temple, which was founded in 2013, has a record of activism. Its stated mission is: “to encourage benevolence and empathy, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice and undertake noble pursuits.”
