PICS: Terrifying scenes as Megabus explodes on the side of a motorway

We've all tried to save a bit of money when booking a trip, but this is the last thing you expect to happen when you travel by budget coach.

New York Times columnist Lucas Peterson was travelling from Chicago to Milwaukee when the bus he was travelling broke down. Peterson says the driver explained to passengers that there was a flat tyre, and there was no need to worry. But just a few minutes later those on board noticed some smoke coming out of the bus. A replacement Megabus was sent to pick up the passengers, but many lost their possessions in the explosion.
