They accuse their son and daughter-in-law of causing them 'immense mental harassment' by not having a child
A couple in India are suing their son and his wife for not having a baby.
Sanjeev Prasad, 61, and his wife Sadhana, 57, say their son Shrey Sagar and his wife Shubhangi Sinha should pay them almost $650,000 (£525,000) for the "mental cruelty" they have inflicted on them by not providing them with a grandchild.
They say the sum is what they have spent on their son during his life. The parents said this includes a $65,000 bill for Shrey's pilot training in the US in 2006 and the money they spent on the his wedding reception at a five-star hotel, a luxury car gifted during their nuptials, and a honeymoon abroad.
Sanjeev Prasad told the
Times of India: "I have only one son. I spent all my savings on his upbringing and education.
"He returned to India in 2007 due to the economic
recession abroad. He had lost his job and could not find another for over two years. I supported him financially during this period as well."

He accused his son and daughter-in-law of causing them "immense mental harassment" by not giving them a child despite being married for six years now.
"My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby," Prasad said. "At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable."
Their lawyer, AK Srivastava, says the case "portrays the truth of society."
The parents are demanding either the financial sum, or that their son and his wife have a child within a year.

Srivastava told
The National that the couple were demanding the money because of "mental cruelty."
"It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents," he said.
The case is set to be heard in court on May 17.
