Three people have died following a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in and around the Japanese city of Osaka.

The quake hit the city a little after 8am local time on Monday, midnight UK time, during the morning rush hour. Bullet train and subway services were suspended and 170,000 homes were left without power.

Local authorities confirmed the number of deaths, a nine-year-old girl and two old men. The girl and one of the men were both killed by collapsing walls, the girl as she walked to her primary school.

The other man, 84, was killed by a falling bookshelf in his home in Ibraki.

More than 200 other people have been injured by debris, burst water mains and fires.

There is no risk of tsunami, the government has confirmed. The tremor recorded an initial magnitude of 5.9 at a depth of 13km, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
