Fans invaded the hotel as a result of the player’s recent performances

Brazilian club Corinthians have condemned their “cowardly” fans after their midfielder Luan was attacked by his own supporters.

Local media claim a number of fans dragging him out of his hotel and attacked him after they deemed his recent performances to have been poor. They added that he was assaulted at the party he had been hosting.

Luan, who was once linked with a move to Liverpool, posted a picture to Instagram which showed his blood-stained clothes.

“Corinthians received with sadness and indignation the information that athlete Luan was assaulted by alleged fans,” the Brazilian giants said in a statement.

“After another repugnant case of violence, Corinthians regrets the current intolerance that dominates Brazilian soccer. Nothing justifies the cowardly aggression suffered by the athlete.”

Both Corinthians and Luan have struggled for form in recent times, with the winger scoring 11 goals in 80 appearances for the side but nothing more than a bit-part player over the course of the last two seasons.

Corinthians were also recently knocked out of the Copa Libertadores at the group stage for just the second time in their history.
