Liverpool are reportedly in pole position to sign promising midfielder Manuel Ugarte this summer.
Jürgen Klopp desperately wants to improve his midfield options in the upcoming transfer window and after choosing to pull out of the race to sign Jude Bellingham, with the club not to spend £130m to sign him in favour of signing multiple players.
Portuguese outlet Record have claimed that Liverpool are preparing talks with Sporting Lisbon's Ugarte in attempt to fend off competition from the likes of Manchester United to bring him to Anfield.
Ugarte has a £52m release clause in his contract and while manager Ruben Amorim wants to keep him, Sporting are allegedly willing to enter negotiations if the fee is met.
The Uruguay international would be one of the many faces Liverpool hope to get through the door as they prepare for a summer of transition.
James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita all look certain to be heading for the exit door while Jordan Henderson and Thiago are both coming towards the latter stages of their career.
If signed, Ugarte would be brought in to play the number eight role and is seen as someone who can play a pivotal part in the side in the long term.
Other names that have been linked with the club include Alexis Mac Allister, Moises Caicedo, Chelsea duo Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher, Bayern Munich's Ryan Gravenberch and Inter Milan star Nicolo Barella.
