Colwill is set to return to Chelsea at the end of the season

Levi Colwill has angered Chelsea supporters with a tweet he sent shortly after the Blues’ heavy defeat against Manchester United on Thursday night.

Chelsea’s miserable campaign continued with a 4-1 defeat in the north west to confirm United’s place in the Champions League while the two-time European champions will have to settle for a place in the bottom half of the Premier League.

Colwill’s season meanwhile has been more than positive, securing Europa League football with Brighton and Hove Albion next season and excelling on loan at the Amex Stadium.

The youngster is expected to return to Stamford Bridge next year to fight for his place in the first team however he has caused quite the stir with the fans of his parent club following his recent social media activity.

Brighton writer and podcaster Ryan Adset tweeted the defender saying: “Hey mate, how’s your evening going?” to which Colwill replied with a photo of him and former Chelsea player Billy Gilmour out celebrating alongside the caption: “Brilliant.”

Although it’s unlikely that there was no malice intended, Chelsea fans didn’t take to the picture well.

“You can also p**s off. Absolute disrespectful. I hope you will one season wonders. P**s off,” wrote one fan.

“It’s like that huh?,” said a second.

Another tweeted: “Kid you think you are prime Maldini? Who are you to disrespect the club that took care of you since you were a little kid? We have better options in LCB now and in the future anyway.”

Despite there being an element of expectation that Colwill will return to Stamford Bridge next season, the England Under-21 international admitted that he doesn’t know where his future lies.

Speaking to The Athletic, he said: “I don’t know what is going to happen [at Chelsea]. I’m still here until the end of the season. I just focus on that, we’ll see what happens.

“Brighton have done a lot for me. They put their trust in me when others didn’t.”
