Grandma mauled to death by pit bull she rescued after finding it living on the street

The 67-year-old couldn’t ‘bear the thought of throwing Choccy back on the streets’

A grandmother was mauled to death by a pit bull she took in as a starving stray on the street.

Anne Shields, a British ex-pat living in Spain, was reportedly left with “catastrophic” head and arm injuries after the dog turned on her, The Sun reported.

According to the publisher, police had to shoot the dog so medics could reach the 67-year-old.

Anne’s neighbours, in Macastre, near Valencia, had called authorities after hearing her screams for help.

The mum of one, who called the dog Choccy, died the next day in hospital.

Anne’s daughter, Sarah, told The Sun she wanted to put Choccy in a local shelter but was told they had no space. “She was an animal lover and couldn’t bear the thought of throwing Choccy back on the streets,” the 43-year-old said.

Anne had reportedly decided to care for the stray until a home could be found.

“It’s a nightmare,” Sarah, from Preston, added.

“She stuck with him and then this happened.”

Pit bulls are a banned breed in the UK, but they can be owned in Spain with a licence as they are “potentially dangerous”.
