Former Manchester United and England defender Wes Brown has been declared bankrupt at the High Court.

The Mirror reported that HMRC filed a bankruptcy petition against Brown, who earned in the region of £50,000 a week at Old Trafford on February 27 before it was confirmed at the High Court on April 12 and made public this week.

Brown, who joined United as a schoolboy, made his debut for the Red Devils in 1998 before going on to make over 200 appearances for the club. He won five Premier League titles, two Champions League’s, two FA Cup’s and one League Cup in his time at United.

He was the youngest member of the United squad who beat Bayern Munich in the 1999 Champions League final to secure a historic treble for the side.

As well as featuring 23 times for England, Brown also played for Sunderland, Blackburn Rovers and Kerala Blasters in India, where he retired in 2018.

Last year, Brown reportedly separated from his wife Leanne, 46, who rose to fame in the reality TV programme: TV show Real Housewives of Cheshire. The couple had three children together and during an interview in 2019, spoke about the pressure that footballers face.

She said: “Yes we’ve got a lovely life and all this money and I’m not saying the money isn’t great but when you’re in it you’re living in this bubble. Although the fans can be amazing they can also be very cruel.

“It must be hard [for footballers] to deal with to be on top one minute and hated the next for a bad kick or missing the goal. We are the ones that are left to pick up the pieces and bear the brunt of whatever is left at the end of their careers.

“Sometimes it’s hard being alone a lot. The lads are away a lot, especially if involved in a high-profile club and England international, too.”
