Conor McGregor was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning

MMA fighter Conor McGregor has been arrested outside the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel, according to a Miami Beach police spokesperson.

The arrest occurred on Monday and the former two-weight UFC world champion has been charged with strong-armed robbery and misdemeanor criminal mischief after allegedly smashing a man’s phone at approximately 5am on Monday morning.

It is believed that the man had been taking photos of McGregor at the time, with police saying that McGregor “slapped the victim’s phone out of his hand, causing it to fall to the floor”.

According to a police report, McGregor then “then stomped on the victim’s phone several times, damaging it,” at which point McGregor picked up the phone and “walked away with it”.

McGregor was reportedly spending time in Miami as he prepared for his return to the UFC. His previous fight, on 7 October 2018, saw him comfortably beaten by Khabib Nurmagomedov.

A fight then broke out after the bout, leading to McGregor receiving a six-month ban from the Octagon. Nurmagomedov received a nine-month ban for his role in the incident.

According to online records, McGregor is being held on $12,000 bond at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.
