Superstar DJ Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, has died aged just 28. The news was announced in a statement from his rep.

The statement read:

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the loss of Tim Bergling, also known as Avicii. He was found dead in Muscat, Oman this Friday afternoon local time, April 20th.  The family is devastated and we ask everyone to please respect their need for privacy in this difficult time. No further statements will be given.”

In 2016 Avicii retired from touring, citing health reasons. In 2014 he had his gallbladder and appendix removed, and also suffered from acute pancreatitis, in part due to alcohol problems.

The Swedish DJ was nominated for a Grammy twice, in 2012 and 2013.

In his final tweet, the dance hitmaker gave poignant thanks for another nomination. This time a Billboard music award nomination for top dance/electronic album.

Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa and Deadmau5 have all made tributes to the DJ.

“Devastating news about Avicii,” said Calvin Harris on Twitter, describing the Swedish musician as “a beautiful soul, passionate and extremely talented with so much more to do.”

Deadmau5 offered his condolences, noting that “Banter aside, nobody can deny what he has accomplished and done for modern dance music.”

Elsewhere, the likes of Dua Lipa, Liam Payne, Nile Rodgers and Charlie Puth used their social media accounts to pay their respects.
