He was taken to hospital by air ambulance in a serious condition.

Barking & Dagenham Police tweeted: “Police are currently dealing with a serious assault on the Heathway, Dagenham.

“The male has been taken to an east London hospital by London Ambulance Service for treatment. Police cordons and a crime scene has been implemented.”

In a later statement the force confirmed the boy’s injuries were not life-threatening or changing.

The road, the Heathway, was closed in both directions and bus services diverted away from the incident.

Police said no arrests had been made at this stage.
