DJ behind chart-topping hit John Reid dies aged 61

He was a founding member of house group Nightcrawlers

Across his music career, the Glaswegian co-wrote hit songs such as 'Unbreakable' (for the Irish boy band), 'Push the Feeling On', 'When the Heartache Is Over' (Turner) and 'A Moment Like This', which was turned from a Kelly Clarkson release into the number one breakout track for The X Factor winner Leona Lewis in 2006.

He was 61 years old.

Reid's ex-fiancée Mary Kiani effectively announced his sudden death in a social media tribute, in which she also recounted their romance.

"Just heard this morning that my first love John Reid died suddenly," it began.

"We met in Glasgow but fell in love in London. He was recording his album with Roy Hay (Culture Club) for his new band [This Way Up]. Myself and Danusia Danoosha Zaremba were on tour, and every night we met at the Columbian hotel.

"We bought our first flat in Dennistoun age 21 & 22. We were both doing great with our music. The birth of The Nightcrawlers happened (Push the feeling on). We toured, we recorded, we did our vocal sessions together."

The couple, who separated after nine years, reunited for a catch-up in 2024 after Kiani worried that one of them would die before they ever saw each other again.

Hearing about Reid's death, Susan Boyle's vocal coach Chris Judge also penned a lengthy acknowledgement of the man he was.

"RIP John Reid, an incredible Scottish singer with so much soul most famous for his vocals in the Nightcrawlers hit push the feeling on," he shared.

"I remember him from doing road shows all over the country back when I was in the boy band days, he was always such a nice guy very encouraging and supportive to all the new bands."

Despite his pedigree as a songwriter, Judge remembered Reid's voice above all.

"It was his voice I loved he was an incredible singer and well respected like Mary in the session scene doing all the backing vocals working for people like Ian Levine," he went on to mention.
