Couple charging daughter rent

‘It’s 300-a-month if she wants to eat here’

A couple have sparked debate after deciding to charge their 19-year-old daughter rent after she made the decision not to go to college.

Erika and Cody Archie shared their no-nonsense parenting with their one million TikTok followers.

In a video shared on the platform, the Gatesville couple asked: “Can you all tell us do you make your graduated high school student pay rent in your house if they don’t go to college yet, tell us what you think?”

Cody added: “What are your thoughts on that? My thought is and our thought together is since she has graduated a couple weeks ago, I told her and I have been telling [our daughter Kylee Deason] for the last couple of months, June 1st your rent is due if you are going to continue to live here.”

Erika seemed like she wanted to go a bit softer on her daughter, saying that she thought it was a “little harsh.”

But Cody wasn’t backing down, saying his daughter would have to pay $200 for rent or $300 if she wanted to have access to the food in the home.

“200 bucks a month is plenty cheap to live like a grub in your parents’ house,” he added.

Their followers were quick to offer their opinions on the parenting decision, with many split over what they thought.

One parent commented: “A definite no for me. I know it’s rare, but I will forever help my kids, no matter the age.”

Another said: “Naa because I didn’t get to enjoy a childhood or a normal family home life so she can stay until shes 40 for all I care.”

A 20-year-old who said he was living with his parents commented that the Archies’ decision “doesn’t make sense” because they want their daughter to move out but are “taking money that would help them do so.”

But some were all for the decision to charge offspring rent once they’re old enough to earn for themselves.

“My parents gave me about 6 months before charging rent. It helped me learn to manage my money better,” one person commented.

Another said: “Our rule is if you are in full time education our home is free but otherwise rent happens.”

Someone else had an alternative suggestion for the couple, writing: “Collect rent then give it back when they move out.”
