Getting into better shape is often a major summer goal, but men hitting the gym regularly might notice an unusual change that has nothing to do with their muscles: their penis can temporarily appear smaller.
The phenomenon has been dubbed “gym penis” or “gym dick” by Chris Bustamante, an aesthetic nurse practitioner and founder of Lushful Aesthetics.
Bustamante explained that the effect can happen to many men, although some will notice it far more than others.
"Some barely notice it. Others may feel like they are turtling, where the penis retracts closer to the body.”
Fortunately, this is not usually a sign that anything is wrong, and the change should disappear once the body has recovered from exercise.
During a tough workout, circulation is temporarily focused on the areas doing the most work, while adrenaline can also put the body into its natural stress response.
Once you finish training and begin to cool down, your circulation gradually settles back into its normal pattern and the temporary retraction should ease. Bustamante says this can take anywhere from just a few minutes to roughly an hour.
That recovery period may be longer after an especially intense session, particularly if you are dehydrated, feeling stressed, exposed to the cold or have had a lot of caffeine or pre-workout.
A brief change after exercising is usually harmless, but it is worth paying attention if it does not return to normal or comes with other symptoms.
Persistent shrinkage, pain, numbness, erectile difficulties, a new or unusual bend, or trouble passing urine are all reasons to speak to a doctor.
Otherwise, there is generally no need to panic. Flaccid size is not fixed and can change throughout the day, with things such as exercise, circulation and temperature all affecting how it looks at any given moment.
