JOE Reviews: This chocolate protein dessert is the closest thing to 90s Angel Delight we’ve tasted

Get in my mouth...

Ben Kenyon

If you grew up in the 90s you probably grew up eating Angel Delight – The dessert of kings.

It wasn’t a proper childhood unless you had this delicious five minute pudding that your mum could quickly whip up in a bowl.

Back in the day it was the stuff of dreams. Our cupboards were packed full of it.

So when I was sent a sample of Bulk Powders’ Complete Protein Dessert, you can imagine my child-like excitement.

For anyone with a sweet tooth that trains or diets seriously, going without anything chocolatey or vaguely naughty can be tantamount to torture.

So anything that remotely resembles a chocolate pudding is manna from heaven.

But to find an Angel Delight substitute that was packed with protein and non of the sh*te, well it was a celestial vision like no other. I cleared the diary and had JOE hold all my calls.

Like a normal protein powder, you measure it out, mix it with water, but instead of chugging it down, you put it in a bowl and chill it for 10 minutes.

The wait killed me, but to kill some time I read the macro nutrient numbers on the back of the pack. There’s 30g of protein per 40g serving – not bad, not bad at all. While there’s just 3.4g of carbs and 1.5g of fat in the same serving of the powder which contains whey, milk and egg proteins.

It was probably the longest 10 minutes of my life, but as the fine people at Guinness say: “Good things come to those who wait.”

It was like the 90s never ended. Thick, gloopy, chocolatey – it actually felt like you were eating a dessert, but one that doesn’t give you muffin tops, a cake gut and food guilt for the rest of the weeks. Witchcraft, now available in chocolate caramel flavour.
