Tom Hardy’s performance in Venom has been described as a ‘masterclass’

Paul Moore

This is going to be amazing.

Thera are certain actors that you’ll watch in anything because you know that they’ll always deliver a good performance, regardless of the film’s overall quality.

Denzel Washington, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, Gary Oldman and Christian Bale are just some of the names that spring to mind, but you make a strong case that Tom Hardy belongs on that list.

Aside from the remarkable commitment that he shows to certain roles – his physical transformations are stunning – there’s an intensity, mischief, and authority that he portrays on screen.

While Peaky Blinders fans are still hoping against hope that his character, Alfie Solomons, returns for the next season, the star of Bronson and The Dark Knight Rises is already working on his next film, the highly-anticipated spin-off Spider-Man, Venom.

During his intense training video, Hardy’s personal trainer has said that fans should expect “the darkest and most powerful villain” and during the recent Comic-Con Experience at Sao Paulo, Brazil, the actor said: “As a pro and as a Dad, I promise to deliver you the best Eddie Brock/Venom I can; because I know how important it is to the fans and to the Marvel Universe and to the awesome team that is working super hard to deliver day and night out here in Atlanta right now.”

It’s clear that the star of Mad Max: Fury Road has a personal connection with Eddie Brock’s story and Venom producer Matthew Tolmach has been talking about Hardy’s intensity and superb skills as an actor.

“Eddie Brock is an incredible character and a gritty, real, authentic, funny but also embittered character and a truth-teller who has made mistakes. You know, Tom… it’s like a master class watching him act every day and he’s such a risk taker and he loved this character. From the day that we first met with him, my partner Avi Arad and I… we found someone who just believed in this character entirely and yet every day pushes it to a place that us mere mortals would never expect it go.”

He adds: “He just has crazy integrity about it and so he challenges everything we’re doing in the most brilliant way. For him, it’s like, ‘if I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it and give it it’s due.’ Because the love that the fans have for that character is profound and he shares it. So, it’s really exciting.”

In other Venom news, it appears that Riz Ahmed’s character has been revealed. As reported previously, the star of The Night Of and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was rumored to be playing Cletus Kasady, the serial killer who becomes bonded to Venom’s symbiote rival Carnage.

Instead, a new photo from the set suggests that Ahmed is playing Dr. Carlton Darke, the head of the Life Foundation.

As for the plot, the film will be inspired by two classic Venom miniseries, Lethal Protector and  Planet of the Symbiotes.

In the Lethal Protector arc, the story kicks-off with a truce between Eddie Brock and Spider-Man as Hardy’s character moves to San Francisco. There, he begins a career as an antihero rather than a villain.

Needless to say, trouble follows hot on Brock’s heels, as the miniseries sees Venom being hunted down by the sinister Life Foundation. The mysterious organisation wants to harness the power of Brock’s symbiote and create five new deadly spawns – Scream, Phage, Riot, Lasher, and Agony.

Venom hits theaters on October 5, 2018. We can’t wait!
