The best action movie of last year is getting a sequel

Wil Jones

Not enough people talk about Atomic Blonde.

The 2017 spy thriller was arguably the best action movie of the year (John Wick Chapter 2 would also be an acceptable answer). Set in 1989, Charlize Theron starred as an M16 agent sent undercover to meet with a KGB mole. Of course, things don’t go to plan, and soon she’s trapped in a deadly web of double-agents and deception.

What made it truly great was its combination of 1980s neon-noir and bone-crunching action. Incredible, brutal yet also crystal-clear action sequences are soundtracked with synthpop bangers by the likes of Depeche Mode and A Flock of Seagulls.

The pièce de résistance of Atomic Blonde came during the phenomenal staircase fight scene, where in one extended single take, Theron dispatched wave after wave of on-coming bad guys. Theron did many of her own stunts in the film, and says she is still dealing with the injuries she received.

Now we have some excellent news – Charlize Theron has confirmed that there is a sequel coming. In an interview with Watch What Happens Live, she said that another Atomic Blonde was in “development”, but didn’t offer any other info.

There’s a lot of potential places a sequel to go. The Cold War setting obviously has plenty of spy intrigue, but they could even move things forward a few years – which would allow for a killer 90s soundtrack as well.
