Can it live up to the hype of the first season?

Squid Game‘s creator has teased that a third season of the hit dystopian show is definitely in the works.

The first season of the record-breaking series was a tearaway 2021 hit and became Netflix’s most-watched show ever.

Speaking on Korean broadcaster KBS, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk said: I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three.”

Presumably those conversations will wrap up in 2022 though as he added: “We will come to a conclusion soon.

“We are aware that everyone is waiting so we’re all trying to think positively about the creation of the next season.”

Speaking of the second season, Hwang said: “The focus will be the story of Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) as he unravels everything.”

The first series followed a series of characters in debt competing against one another in a tournament of deadly games with the potential of taking away a giant cash prize.

Some 142 million people have tuned into the first season so far. To put that into context, Lupin part one, the second most popular show on the platform, drew in just 76 million viewers.

The Squid Game craze went even further online. A real-life version was set up recently by popular Youtuber MrBeast and a streamed version of the IRL game raked in an incredible 42,000,000 views in a day – higher than the number of people who watched the original show in its first week on Netflix.

However the hype has also led to some dire consequences. One man who smuggled copies of Squid Game into North Korea to sell on the black market has been sentenced to death by firing squad.

Radio Free Asia revealed that the show had been smuggled in using USB drives and SD cards.

Speaking about the forthcoming second season, Hwang said the mass public adoration around the show led to the concept of more episodes.

He told Associated Press there is “so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season… So I almost feel like you leave us no choice.”
