The Simpsons have done it again

The Simpsons has become famous over the years for its remarkable knack for some of predicting the future, and it looks like it’s done it again.

Fans of the iconic yellow family may well remember the 1996 episode Homerpalooza, which included a joke about hip-hop icons Cypress Hill teaming up with the London Symphony Orchestra.

The episode, which sees Homer try to become a carnival freak at a music festival to try and impress his kids, features a number of celebrity cameos from the likes of Peter Frampton, Sonic Youth, The Smashing Pumpkins and Cypress Hill.

At one point, a roadie goes backstage with members of an orchestra to ask: “Hello bands, who is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra?”

He continues: “Come on people somebody ordered a London Symphony Orchestra… possibly while high. Cypress Hill, I’m looking in your direction.”

The musical trio of B-Real, Sen Dog and Eric Bobo then have a quick discussion before concluding that they might have actually been the ones who booked the orchestra.

They then ask the classical musicians if they know their smash hit Insane in the Brain.

Together, Cypress Hill and the orchestra then perform a fantastic version of the song, which prompts Marge to exclaim: “Now this, I like!”

Almost three decades after the episode aired, this bizarre collaboration is going to actually come true.

Cypress Hill will share the stage with the London Symphony Orchestra, to perform hits from the hip hop collective’s revered album Black Sunday, along with other hits from their legendary back catalogue.

The group said: “We are thrilled to be performing with the London Symphony Orchestra in such a prestigious venue as the Royal Albert Hall. It’s a dream come true, a collaboration only The Simpsons could have predicted.”

Kathryn McDowell DBE, the LSO’s Managing Director said: “After years of social media teasing it, many fans may have started to believe it would only be a pipedream – but the LSO is delighted to finally be joining Cypress Hill on stage and in person, and look forward to creating an unforgettable musical moment!  Many thanks to the creators of The Simpsons for the idea and to AEG Artisitc and PolyArts for making it all happen.”

Cypress Hill are one of the most successful hip-hop acts ever. They have sold over 20 million albums worldwide, with their magnum opus LP Black Sunday regularly cited as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time.

Lucy Noble, Artistic Director at AEG Presents said: “AEG Artistic is extremely thrilled to be working with Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra on such a unique and long-awaited concert. It’s been a long time since these two legendary acts paired up in Springfield, but we know that the real thing will be worth the wait.”

Cypress Hill with London Symphony Orchestra will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on July 10, 2024, with tickets on sale from 10am Wednesday, March 27.
