Netflix has just added Pulse, its first English-language medical drama series - which is already earning comparisons to the smash hits ER and Grey's Anatomy.
Created by Zoe Robyn (Hawaii Five-0), who serves as showrunner alongside TV veteran Carlton Cuse (Lost), the series takes place as a hurricane barrels towards Miami's busiest Level 1 Trauma Centre, Maguire Hospital.
The story follows third-year resident Dr. Danny Simms (Willa Fitzgerald), who is unexpectedly thrust into a promotion when beloved Chief Resident Dr. Xander Phillips (Colin Woodell, Ambulance) is suspended.
"Amid the worsening storm and an onslaught of trauma cases, the hospital goes into lockdown, and Danny and Xander must find a way to work together - even as the bombshell details of a complicated and illicit romance between them begin to spill out," the plot synopsis adds.
"The rest of the ER is left to process the fallout of their relationship while balancing their own challenges, both personal and professional, as they work under the pressure of life-or-death stakes."
Alongside Fitzgerald and Woodell, the cast of Pulse includes Arturo Del Puerto (For All Mankind), Jack Bannon (Pennyworth), Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day), Jessie T. Usher (The Boys), Justina Machado (ER), Nestor Carbonell (Bates Motel) and Santiago Segura (Scream).
And given the runaway success of similar medical dramas like ER, Grey's Anatomy and The Pitt (which is yet to reach this side of the Atlantic yet), Netflix will be hoping that their latest series proves to be a big hit.
Reviews are still trickling in for Pulse, but you can read a sample of some of its positive write-ups below:
AV Club: "Under the guise of a fast-paced procedural is a provocative dissection of toxic workplace romances and the intersection of ambition and love."
The Hollywood Reporter: "Netflix’s enjoyably juicy medical drama will scratch that Grey’s Anatomy itch."
Los Angeles Times: "If the imminent end of Max’s The Pitt has left you wondering what you’ll do for a drama set in an emergency room, Netflix, taking your temperature, has scheduled its own ER drama Pulse."
