The endless story of Michael Schofield and his brother, Lincoln is set to return to the screens.
Well, kind of.
Years after Prison Break was shelved, after 90 episodes between 2005 and 2009 and a fifth season in 2017, Entertainment Weekly (EW) reports the hit show originally starring Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell as the brothers fighting an endless battle to stay out of prison, has been sentenced to a reboot.
It seems, there is more to tell from Fox River State Penitentiary.
For anyone who missed the show, it centred around the Schofield brothers. Lincoln, played by Purcell, was locked up for a crime he didn’t commit and put on death row. Michael, played by Miller, gets himself locked up next to his sibling, having hatched an elaborate escape plan, previously etched into his body in a series of obscure tattoos. But, once out of jail, the brothers’ problems only just begin.
EW reports that Hulu is developing a new series based on the beloved Fox drama.
Sadly, or not, the reboot won’t follow the characters of the original saga but will be set in the same world and the original Prison Break creators, Paul Scheuring, Dawn Olmstead, Marty Adelstein, and Neal Moritz are on board.
Prison Break was originally a ratings juggernaut, the series picked up a Golden Globe for Best Television Series Drama in its debut season, but most fans would agree, it got worse as it went on.
Fox had planned on another season, but shelved them in 2019.
The series also spawned a TV movie, The Final Break, and a short-lived mobisode spinoff, Prison Break: Proof of Innocence, which was exclusively available on mobile phones.
In a now-deleted Instagram post, Miller, who is gay, said he did not want to return to the role of Michael Scofield. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” the actor wrote.
“Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”
He continued, “No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.” Responding to the post, his onscreen brother Purcell voiced his support: “Glad you have made this decision for your health and your truth.”
