Apple TV+ has just added Prime Target to its service, a new thriller series with rising star Leo Woodall (One Day, The White Lotus).
In the eight-episode show, the actor plays Edward Brooks, a brilliant young math postgraduate who is on the verge of a major breakthrough.
"If he succeeds in finding a pattern in prime numbers, he will hold the key to every computer in the world," the plot synopsis reads.
"Soon, he begins to realize an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea before it’s even born, which throws him into the orbit of Taylah Sanders, a female NSA agent (played by Quintessa Swindell. Master Gardener) who’s been tasked with watching and reporting on mathematicians’ behaviour.
"Together, they start to unravel the troubling conspiracy Edward is at the heart of."
Prime Target was created by Steve Thompson (Sherlock) and produced by Ridley Scott (Gladiator 2).
Joining Woodall - who in recent months has emerged as a contender to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond - in the series' cast includes David Morrisey (The Walking Dead), Fra Fee (Hawkeye), Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock), Martha Plimpton (The Regime), Sidse Babett Knudsen (Westworld) and Stephen Rea (The Crying Game).
And though Prime Target has earned mixed reviews from critics for the most part, some have been effusive in their praise - highlighting Woodall's lead turn and the show's blend of character study and spy thriller as positives.
You can read a sample of some other favourable reviews for Prime Target below.
CBR: "Prime Target might feel influenced by Good Will Hunting, and to a lesser extent A Beautiful Mind and Dan Brown's novels, but it also has its own serious espionage chops."
Collider: "A provocative and intelligent series that bridges ancient questions with modern security vulnerabilities."
ScreenAnarchy: "A bit of light entertainment about the possible end of ordinary life as we know it; it's fun and twisty. … Mathematicians will love it. And so will people like me, who have trouble balancing our checkbooks."

In a four-star review The Guardian, Lucy Mangan wrote: "It’s a little bit Good Will Hunting (though instead of a charming janitor we are asked to root for a young man who appears to have read Applied Morosity for his undergrad degree), a little bit The Bourne Identity, with more than a dash of A Beautiful Mind and The Da Vinci Code thrown in."
