His prison mugshot was made famous by the gripping Netflix series Making a Murderer.
For some it's the face of a cold blooded murderer and for many more it's a tragic symbol of what people see as a deeply flawed justice system in the US.
But it's a face that has changed radically since he was first arrested in 1985 and wrongfully jailed for the sexual assault of a Wisconsin woman.

The series follows his subsequent arrest, trial and incarceration in 2007 for the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.
But you can see the toll the past 10 years in prison has taken on Avery in the most recent photo of him with his family.
He looks vastly different from the man filmed in the Netflix docuseries. The same goes for his nephew Brendan Dassey, who was jailed for murder alongside him aged just 16, in this latest photo in prison.
Avery is still fighting for his freedom after being given a life sentence without parole.
