Netflix's new serial killer thriller, Ripley, has proved to be a hit with viewers after it landed on the streamer earlier this week.
However, following its release, people are discovering a film which is based on the same bestselling crime novel by Patricia Highsmith.
The new eight-episode series from Netflix sees Andrew Scott star as the titular Tom Ripley, a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York who is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. His acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder.
Ripley landed on Netflix in the UK and Ireland earlier this week (April 4) and has already received rave reviews.
Reacting to the series on social media, one person labelled it the "best TV I've seen in a long time," adding that Scott will "be getting every gong going."
Another said: "I'm having a big cuppa tea and watching the first episode of #Ripley on Netflix and I'm here to tell you that it and Andrew Scott are both astonishingly beautiful & strange & deeply unsettling & you should watch it."
The newfound interest in Highsmith's novel has led to people going back and discovering the 1999 adaptation of the novel, though.
The Talented Mr Ripley was adapted into a film of the same title, starring Jude Law, Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Cate Blanchett and Philip Seymour-Hoffman also feature in supporting roles, and it was a box office smash, retaining a strong 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Viewers of the new Netflix adaptation have taken to social media to reflect on the series versus the film.
"Before this premieres... y'all should watch The Talented Mr. Ripley for those who haven't watched it yet," one person urged others.
Another put: "Rewatched The Talented Mr Ripley last night, in advance of checking out Andrew Scott's new version. What a film!"
A third wrote: "There’s a remake of The Talented Mr Ripley on Netflix called Ripley I’m about to check it out. I need to go back and watch the original after because it’s been at least a decade since I’ve seen it."
The 1999 film version of The Talented Mr Ripley is also available to stream on Netflix alongside the new series adaptation.
