Netflix’s gripping new crime documentary already has people absolutely hooked

On August 28, 2003, a 46-year-old pizza deliveryman named Brian Wells walks into into a bank in Erie, Pennsylvania.

He’s carrying a shotgun and says that somebody has strapped a bomb to his body.

After asking for $250,000, he gets considerably less than that but is happy with his bounty and leaves.

Unfortunately for Brian, his getaway car is stopped by police officers that were quick to the scene. The largest question remains unanswered though, who strapped the bomb to Wells’ chest?

After the authorities arrive, they discover notes in Wells’ car that that suggest he was just a cog in an elaborate criminal machine. It this all sounds like a real-life version of Saw, you’re not too far away from the truth.

What unfolds is the bizarre tale of the “pizza bomber” heist that dominated media in the US and truly belongs in the category of ‘so strange that it’s actually true.’

Welcome to Evil Genius: The True Story of America’s Most Diabolical Bank Heist. We’ve had our eye on this one for a while but it has just been released on Netflix and people are already addicted to it.

The new documentary series has just landed on Netflix and if you’re a fan of their most recent feature, Wild Wild Country, you’ll be pleased to know that Evil Genius is executive produced by Wild Wild Country’s Mark and Jay Duplass.

The four-episode series is now available to watch and here’s the official synopsis. “In 2003 in Erie, Pennsylvania, a robbery gone wrong and a terrifying public murder capture the nation’s attention, and a bizarre collection of Midwestern hoarders, outcasts, and lawbreakers play cat-and-mouse with the FBI. Eventually, a middle-aged mastermind named Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong — once a town beauty, now a woman grappling with mental illness — is arrested. But 15 years later, Evil Genius proves there’s more to the conspiracy and murders than was ever thought.”

Despite the fact that it has just been released, people are already addicted to the latest true crime offering from Netflix.

In fact, it might just have the most gripping opening of any recent documentary series.
