Netflix really weren’t joking about stopping everyone watching the best foreign shows

Netflix told the world is was ready to launch a crackdown on users dodging regional content restrictions to watch the best shows from around the world.

The internet TV giant warned us all it would start in the new few weeks. Tech experts doubted the capabilities of Netflix to stop people using virtual private networks (VPN) and proxies to get round the territorial content barriers. But it looks like the purge has already begun. Reports coming out of Australia suggest that users are being shut out from watching movies and TV shows from the streaming behemoth's US catalogue. Anyone using a VPN to access content in the US are apparently getting this message: "You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again." It looks like this assault on proxies is only happening in Australia at the moment, but if this official blog post are anything to go by, it could be extended to markets like the UK soon. 'Some members use proxies or “unblockers” to access titles available outside their territory,' Netflix bigwig David Fullagar wrote. 'To address this, we employ the same or similar measures other firms do. This technology continues to evolve and we are evolving with it. 'That means in coming weeks, those using proxies and unblockers will only be able to access the service in the country where they currently are.'
