A ‘better life’ than living in a $90m mansion

Mark Wahlberg is joining the Hollywood exodus and has revealed he is ditching Tinsel Town for a better life in Nevada.

The Planet of the Apes and Me Time actor said that he decided to leave LA in the hope of giving his four children a “better life”.

Speaking on chat show The Talk, the 51-year-old explained that, like many other actors, he moved to Los Angeles to further his career, but after more than a decade in his $87.5 million Beverly Hills mansion, he had only made a “couple of movies in the entire time that I was there”.

The house, set on more than six acres, complete with a golf course, skate park and grotto, 12 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms, was listed for sale in April. You can read about the listing in the LA Times here.

Wahlberg told The Talk: “So, to be able to give my kids a better life and follow and pursue their dreams whether it be my daughter as an equestrian, my son as a basketball player, my younger son as a golfer, this made a lot more sense for us.”

The actor has four children under the age of 20 with his 44-year-old wife, Rhea Durham. The eldest is Ella, 19. He has two boys, Michael, 16 and 14-year-old Brendan and a young daughter, Grace, 12.

Wahlberg also admitted that tax was a motivating factor behind moving, saying relocating would allow the family to establish ventures that aren’t possible in LA.

This includes making a film studio of his own, as Wahlberg wants to work from home, as well as setting up a “shoe factory” and a “factory for [his clothing line] Municipal.”

“So we came here to just give ourselves a new look, a fresh start for the kids, and there’s lots of opportunity here, so I’m really excited about the future,” he said.

“After this gubernatorial election, hopefully we go to legislation and get a bill passed so we can get tax credits for the state, build a state of the art studio here and make this Hollywood 2.0.”

Despite being a Hollywood A-lister, Wahlberg said he is very much a homebody when he isn’t making movies.

“Every free moment that I have, I’m at home,” he said.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that Wahlberg spent $14.5 million on a Las Vegas townhome in August – his second purchase in the wealthy area of The Summit Club.

His first was a 2.5 acre plot of land that set him back $15.6 million in July.
