Love Island’s Zara McDermott rushed to hospital in ‘excruciating pain’

‘I had excruciating pain in my abdomen’

Zara McDermott has been rushed to hospital suffering from “excruciating pain”.

The Love Island star revealed on Instagram on Saturday that she rushed to A&E during the early hours of the morning with doctors suspecting a cyst had burst in her ovary.

The 25-year-old, who posted pictures to her story looking worn out with a catheter in her arm, wrote: “Wow last night was so eventful!

“Sam had to rush me to A&E because I had excruciating pain in my abdomen – had a feeling it was a burst cyst on my ovary because I’ve had it before on my other side and it felt similar.”

McDermott went on to say the A&E team “were just incredible”. She was seen “quickly” and had tests and scans done within two hours of arriving.

She explained: “They wanted to keep me in overnight but after all the pain relief I felt a lot better so I had a few hours in bed before heading back this morning for another few scans.

“They want to make sure my ovary isn’t twisted as I was presenting with all symptoms last night.

“But likely burst cyst, which if you have had it before is excruciating.”

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can grow on the ovaries, the NHS explains on its website. Most are harmless and disappear without treatment.

The star’s health scares come after her documentary, Disordered Eating, didn’t go down with some fans. The doc explores the impact of influencers’ posts on people struggling with eating disorders and some found it “tone-deaf”.

However, some viewers praised the reality star for understanding she was “part of the problem and wanting to fix it.”

She told BBC Breakfast presenters Charlie Stayt and Tina De Healy that she was “trolled quite badly” due to her weight when she finished Love Island and because of that “went on my own health and fitness journey and lost some weight as a result of that”.

McDermott continued: “I wasn’t suffering from an eating disorder myself but I knew there was a massive demand for weight loss content so I was just posting not knowing the detrimental impact it was having on my followers. I was just meeting the demands for that content.”
