That isn't including the already announced new movie arriving in 2024
During their Thursday earnings call, Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav announced that they have brokered a deal to make multiple new movies based on the books of J.R.R. Tolkien, which - like the previous
Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Trilogies - will be developed through WB label New Line Cinema.
While WB have purchased the rights to these big screen adaptations, Amazon currently owns the rights to the TV adaptation of LOTR, which they put to good use in 2022 with the arrival of the
single most expensive season of television ever made.
Other representatives at WB stated of the new LOTR adaptations: "[We] took an unprecedented leap of faith to realise the incredible stories, characters and world of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ on the big screen […] but for all the scope and detail lovingly packed into the two trilogies, the vast, complex and dazzling universe dreamed up by J.R.R. Tolkien remains largely unexplored."
At the time of writing, no official statement has been made regarding any potential directors, writers or cast attached to the new movies.
All of this doesn't include the already announced
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which is due for release in cinemas in April 2024. That animated feature length movie is set 260 years before the events of The Two Towers, detailing the previous battle that took place at Helm's Deep. The movie will include the voice performances of Brian Cox (Succession) and Miranda Otto (LOTR).
